14-year old ‘garage’ boy doused in petrol, set on fire
His remains to be buried in Rombo this weekend

By Arusha Times Reporter

It  was solemn mood among hundreds of mourners who turned up at the Regional Hospital Mortuary last week to pay last respects to a vehicle workshop boy reportedly set ablaze by a motorist.

The 14-year-old youth Pius Mathias who used to serve as an apprentice at Minja’s vehicle repair workshop located in Mbauda area of the Municipality, died last Wednesday after being admitted in hospital for two days.

The boy, a resident of Ngusero suffered serious wounds after allegedly being set ablaze by a motorist assisted by two other people. He will be buried in Rombo District this weekend.

While attending normal duties at the garage a week ago, a motorist customer, allegedly set him ablaze under claims that the deceased was a thief

Regional Police Commander, Mr Basilio Matei has confirmed the incident saying two suspects were being held in custody for questioning as the third suspect was still at large.

Head of the workshop, Gasper Stephen Minja said a customer had reportedly pulled  at the garage on Wednesday and found an ongoing scuffle regarding a missing car accessory which the boy was being accused of stealing.

“I was absent then but one of my workers phoned me with the bad news,” he said.

Apparently a plug-in, MP3 car adopter was taken from one of the vehicles being repaired at the workshop.

The newcomer to the scene started beating the boy, it was alleged. As if the beating wasn’t enough, an irate man grabbed a container of gasoline from a nearby mechanic and poured its contents onto the youth then set him on fire as other workers watched in horror.

When it occurred to them that ‘the boy was actually burning’ there were frantic efforts to quench the flames.  When the fire was finally put out, the victim was in pathetic state.

A suspected attacker whisked the badly burnt boy onto his car and sped off to the Central Police Station where he allegedly  filed a false statement to the effect that the boy burnt when a vehicle he was repairing at the garage erupted in flames.

“We found the boy in serious condition at the hospital and we reported to police what actually took place, the boy was purposely burned it wasn’t a fire accident,” said Mr Minja.

After preliminary investigations, the police later launched a manhunt and managed to arrest some suspects.

Karatu gets district court

By Edward Selasini

Karatu district will soon get district court services for the first time since the commissioning of the area into a district in 1995.

The district court will be housed in the structures that were originally planned for a primary court at Karatu.

The conversion of the Karatu primary court buildings for use by the district court was officiated by the Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Mathew Chikawe.

Minister Chikawe said last week the decision to convert the new buildings use from primary court to district court was in line with the vision of his ministry to give the people justice in time.

Chikawe said he had consulted with the Chief Justice Agostino Ramadhani to give the Karatu residents a district court.

He said the process of furnishing the buildings was nearly complete and  a district magistrate would soon be posted there.

Karatu’s District Commissioner Mathew Sedoyeka said, the government decision was timely as the residents had suffered a lot since 1995 when the district was commissioned.

Karatu residents cases had been taken for hearing in Mbulu district and later shifted to Monduli when Mbulu fell under the new regional administration of Manyara.
