Police arrest armed carjackers

By Happy Lazaro

Police in Arusha have arrested three suspected armed carjackers and robbers on  January 17 at Nkoanrua village in Arumeru district.

According to the Arusha Regional Police Commander Basilio Matei, one of the suspects Juma Abdallah alias James (31) resident of Ngarenaro hired a taxi with registration numbers T518 AMC white Toyota Corolla driven by one Felix Isaya.

James wanted to be driven to a flower farm, but the car was stopped by two men in black clothes on the way.

The driver was tied up and locked in the car luggage boot, before the trio started making their way in the car to the shop of one Deogratias Tarimo, which they planned to rob. However, after noticing they were being followed by Police, the group fled inside their taxi.

At Makata, the group ditched the car and tried to escape on foot. But James was  caught by the chasing police, and was found with a rifle numbered 427 JM on search.

Besides the rifle with a sawn off barrel, he had six rounds of ammunition. He named his two accomplices on questioning as Justine Vayani (32), a resident of Oldadai, and Jarome Daudi (30), resident of Ngulelo, and led the police to their hideout where they were also arrested.

The RPC said they would be arraigned in court on completion of investigations on their other possible involvement in the past criminal acts.

Thugs shoot shopkeeper in suspected revenge killing

By Happy Lazaro

A Muriet village resident in the municipality, Eradus Joseph Chuwa (30) has been shot dead in his shop by suspected avengers on January 21.

The shopkeeper had gone out of his shop for a short call at 1.30pm when two unknown persons came out of a hideout and shot him on the chest, according to the Arusha Regional Police Commander Basilio Matei.

Neighbours quickly alerted police to the incident and Chuwa was  taken to the Mount Meru Regional Hospital for treatment, but was pronounced dead on arrival due to excessive bleeding.

The two gunmen escaped from the crime scene on a red motorcycle, whose registration number is unknown. The RPC said the motive for the attack was clearly revenge as the suspects took nothing from the shop.

Mr Matei added motorcycles have become increasing prevalent in acts of brutality such as this, as they allow quick getaways on roads or even foot paths.

The RPC called on the public to be vigilant for any use of motorcycles in criminal activity.

Suspicious father allegedly kills 2 children

By Happy Lazaro

John Belele (55) is in  custody after allegedly killing his two children at Eyasingito village in Ngorongoro district on January 17  at 9am.

Arusha Regional Police Commander Basilio Matei told reporters preliminary investigations had shown Belele had suspected the two children had been fathered by another man.

The RPC explained the suspect had stayed away from his home for 10 consecutive years before recently returning to find his wife with the two children.

He is said to have been working in Kenya all those years without visiting his family. When he returned, he had a misunderstanding with his wife on the parentage of the children.

On the morning of  January 17, Belele called the two children, Mpole John (13) and Faida John (7) and started beating them with a club and some sharp objects, killing them instantly.

The children’s mother wasn’t at home at the time of the incident.

Belele didn’t even bother to run away from the scene and police who were called by neighbours arrested him and took him to Ngorongoro Police Station.

He would be arraigned in court as soon as investigations were over.

Two acquitted on in adequate evidence

by Joseph Lyimo

Two people, Raphael Frank and Kaanaeli Minja, have been acquitted from a case of destruction of property and mass injuring of 35 people at Tanzanite primary school in Simanjiro district.

The two suspects were acquitted, on inadequate evidence to convict them on the charges against them, by the Babati District Magistrate John Bigambo.

It was previously alleged before the court that on December 5, 2008, the two destroyed property at the school worth Tsh 90,000, including roofing corrugated iron sheets and windows. They were also accused of harming 35 people, 22 of whom were claimed to be seriously injured.

The prosecution side had originally planned to line up six witnesses, however only three appeared. These were Police Constable Hashim, Detective Nicco and Alen Alex, Executive Officer for Songambele location in Mererani.

Magistrate Bigambo said the court was acquitting the two as the prosecution had failed to prove their case beyond reasonable doubt.
