RC wants TRA to take stern measures on tax evaders By Edward Selasini The Arusha Regional Commissioner Isidore Leka Shirima, has ordered the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) to investigate and arrest businessmen who evaded taxes as the act deprived the government of its revenue. Shirima sounded the order at the climax of tax payers day at the Sheikh Amri Abeid Stadium last week. He was invited as chief guest. Shirima warned against unreceipted sales done by some businessmen saying such acts were illegal and punishable under law. He called on TRA to keep their records updated for easier collection of taxes and revenue for the national good. He also asked TRA to maintain good relations with the tax payers. Shirima quoted this year’s tax payers day theme as “Pay Your Tax for the National Existence” adding that there were unscrupulous business people who tried to circulate propaganda of unfair tax impositions. The RC said he was assured the TRA workers now worked more efficiently from a modern building and have all the necessary facilities that enable them discharge their duties effectively and efficiently. He commended TRA workers for increased collection of revenue in the region. In 2008/9 TRA in the region collected Tsh.116.271 billion, a substantial rise from Tsh.101.8 billion collected during the 2007/08 period. This is an increase of about 14 percent. In the week long tax payer day celebrations, TRA workers gave provisions and items worth Tsh.1,800,000 to an orphanage. TRA issued foodstuff, garments, detergents, shoes and bedding to the Lemara based “Kituo Bora cha Watoto” (KIBOWA). Speaking at a luncheon with the “KIBOWA” children, the Regional TRA Manager for Arusha, Evaristo Kileva said TRA was concerned with the plight of the disadvantaged children and assured them of continued support. “KIBOWA” children’s home was started in January 2005 by two mothers: Sifaeli Mchome and Amina Ramadhani with eight children after they attended a home based care for HIV/AIDS patients and victims.
