Lake Manyara dries up
Water level lowest since 1923

Lake Manyara is drying up. This time it is for real.
Extensive and irresponsible agricultural activities along their banks are slowly but surely drying up the rivers that feed the Rift-Valley Lake. Ecologists warn that unless drastic measures are taken, the water feature may totally disappear in ten years time

Government stops Babati mining operations
Conservation and mining are strange bed fellows

The Emerald and Alexandrite mines found at Mayoka village in Babati District will soon be closed to pave way for the expansion of Lake Manyara National Park.
The Park Warden Ms Betrita Loibooke said an official directive from the State House has ordered the mining operations to be halted and miners vacate the precinct because conservation and mining can never go in sync.
Mr Emmanuel Penko the spokesperson for other artisan miners at the quarry said the decision would hurt them because they were in the process of applying for loans to buy better equipment for their operations when they received the ‘bad news.’

Rotting cattle carcasses now matter of concern

Pungent smell from piles of  animals’ carcasses strewn in parts of Monduli, Longido and Ngorongoro Districts, is raising health concerns. In Loliondo, dead animals have been blocking roads.
“We have already directed ward and village executives to start clearing these decaying carcasses, the best way should be by burying the rotting piles,” Mr Elias Wawa Lali, the Ngorongoro District Commissioner said  over the phone.
