What we want is refund … and punitive damages Dear Editor On March 18, 2009, I filed charges against Barclays’s Bank with regard to the loss of my 400,000 /= at the Moshi branch. On 3/3/2009 at 14:37 my Tanzanian Associate, Mr. Yusur Msuya, attempted to use the Roch Charitable Trust Visa Card to withdraw 400,000 /= from Barclay’s ATM machine. The Roch Charitable Trust of America assists “The Orphans of Kilimanjaro Charitable Trust” in fund raising and furnishes the funds necessary for daily operating expenses. The ATM malfunctioned and no money was dispensed. The ATM receipt issued at 14:37 on 3/3/2009 stated…..”Your account will be reimbursed.” Mr. Msuya was informed by bank personnel that the funds would be reimbursed within 7 days. When that did not occur, he was told to wait 14 days. Finally, after weeks of waiting, I visited the bank manager and was informed that my only recourse was to contact my bank in America. This is a common practice on the part of Tanzania Banks … i.e. placing the blame on the bank issuing the original Visa or Master Card. Several years ago, Stanbic bank in Moshi (in similar fashion) made me suffer a loss of 200,000 /= from the Roch Trust when I personally attempted to withdrawn funds for the children’s Christmas. Needless to say, the children did not have an enjoyable Christmas. Over the years, many visitor/tourists have suffered the same humiliation and loss of funds. The overwhelming majority who have lost their money simply return to their country of origin…. writing the loss off. However, The Orphans Trust depends on ATM funds withdrawn weekly to feed, house, cloth, and educate the orphaned and poor children in our care. My Banker in America has informed me that Barclays Bank has seriously neglected their fiduciary responsibilities in not expeditiously refunding the money in a timely fashion. Subsequently, I have been forced to spend unnecessary time and funds in Moshi filing charges against Barclay Bank. My Charitable Trust will be seeking not only the return of our funds, but punitive damages. If you have suffered a similar fate at the hands of Tanzanian Banks, I would appreciate your input. I had tears upon seeing the tortoise Dear Valentine Just by chance this morning, I came across your latest edition on the internet and I was absolutely delighted to read your article about the upcoming 75th anniversary of Arusha School. I went to the school in 1949 and 1950, and lived in Tanga. My time at the school and the friends I made gave me much joy, and I have a part of me that will always be Tanzanian. I had tears upon seeing the tortoise and it made me highly emotional. One of the things I used to do shortly after arriving back at school, and when I was feeling homesick particularly for my dog Willie, was to go and talk to and stroke the tortoise. I am overjoyed that it is still with the school, and I know that all ex-students will feel the same way. I would like to attend the celebrations in September, and I would be grateful if you could provide me with dates and events etc. so that I can make arrangements.
