Call to improve coffee grades for better prices

By Happy Lazaro

Coffee growers in the country have been advised to improve their coffee grades through better farming methods.

The call was made in Arusha by Bernie Hewett of SCAN-Tanzania which deals with coffee crop up-grading in Arusha and Manyara regions.

He said although the farmers had done their level best there are challenges to be met to attain selling coffee grades in the world market. Hewett called on the farmers to practice  bio-agriculture on their coffee farms for better land conservation.

She called on the farmers and other stakeholders to work hard in production, processing and grading of the crop for better prices in the market.

Hewett despite encouraging efforts by many stakeholders she said she  had noticed some negligent farmers whose care for their coffee trees needed a lot of improvement.

She said the increase of 2 – 3 per cent in prices for the best quality Tanzania coffee per year was not satisfactory.

His talk with the gathering of coffee growers from Manyara and Arusha regions was meant to identify challenges and chart out ways to overcome them for the best grades coffee that would fetch best prices in the market.
