Is the Kili ledger still at the summit? Dear Editor, I made an ascent of Kilimanjaro in 1949 from Moshi, with guide Johannes who spoke no English, in less than 24 hours. Neither of us had a watch but we left the hotel early in the morning and reached the summit before daybreak the next day. At the summit, then called Kaiser Wilhelmspitze, there was a tin trunk containing a large ledger in which climbers wrote their names and dates. I would be grateful to know what happened to this ledger. Any ideas? I have a photo of me with the glacier behind. It was much larger than it is now, of course. I also have one of Johannes with his long white robe and alpenstock when we paused briefly at the second hut. I travelled down to Moshi by truck from Mogadishu where I was in the army. Great trip. The only traveller I met in the whole journey was Colonel Richard Mindetzhagen coming from exploration in Arabia. Returning from Moshi to Nairobi there was not a single vehicle en route through the game reserve. David Nott dvnott@intelnet.gt
