High interest rates setback to education development

By Edward Selasini

High interest rates charged by banks in the country are obstructing private schools to apply for development loans. It is claimed that such schools are for commercial gains rather than social services.

Trust St. Patrick standard 7 graduates eager to receive their
school leaving certificates.

The remarks were made by the Administrator of Trust St.  Patrick Schools, Mrs. Dinah Patrick during the Sixth Graduation Ceremony held on Saturday, September 13, this year at the School grounds in Arumeru District.

Mrs. Patrick asked the Government to consider the responsibility taken by private schools in educating Tanzanians. She said the schools are operating in hardships through bank loans which have high interest rates.

She added that high prices   of commodities were also causing difficulties  in running of  schools  creating a situation whereby  school fees are not enough to offset costs.

In response, the guest of honour, Arumeru District Commissioner,  Mr. Elias Wawa Lali said that the Government recognizes and honours the academic efforts and contribution of private schools.

Trust St. Patrick is an English medium school has  enrolled  more than 900 students from Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi.
