Look who is playing golf now!

So who is currently teeing off at the local golf course? Local youths are on their way to become future Tiger Woods dispelling the belief that in order to play golf one must be rich. Raymond John was standing in the bunker as the new kids were hitting the ball.

The issues of high costs that are associated with playing golf could be what are driving local people away from the game. The sporting equipment is expensive and not readily available.

Some Tanzanians, like me are lucky because the Gymkhana club is sponsoring us and thus we can afford to play. I have participated in a number of tournaments including the recent ‘Ujirani mwema’ event and played in various regions like Kilimanjaro, Morogoro and Dar-es-Salaam.

My skills are also improving; in fact, I am working hard to reach highest playing levels.

A number of Tanzanians are now playing golf thus doing away with the belief that the sport was just for the ‘Wazungu’ (whites). Most the Tanzanians are doing well.

In Arusha however, we have to be grateful to the Gymkhana club whose management is doing all it can to encourage young Tanzanians to participate in golf. The club has been very supportive.

Gymkhana has been sponsoring us in everything, including footing the bills whenever we have to play outside Arusha.

When I started to play golf there already was a medley of players from all races, I found myself playing with Africans, Whites, Indians and most from different countries as well.

What I however discovered is that local people have the misconception that in order to play golf one must be very rich. Indeed, the playing equipment and related accessories could be quite expensive.

Now this is where the Gymkhana club comes in. The management is currently assisting upcoming local golfers to establish themselves in the game, including giving them equipment and sponsoring their participations in various tournaments.
