Local dairy farmers yet to use NAIC services

By Happy Lazaro

Local small scale dairy farmers are yet to make the best use of the services offered at the Usa River based National Artificial Insemination Centre (NAIC) to improve productivity of their dairy animals.

NAIC Director, Charles Makundi told the Arusha Times in his office that the Centre  exported its services to foreign dairy farmers while the local small scale farmers were unaware of the availability of the service at their doors step.

Makundi said NAIC’s objective was to improve the animals especially the dairy cattle quality and hence dairy production in the country.

He lamented  that many small scale farmers were ignorant of the advantage they would get in improving their animal breed for better production through the use of artificial insemination available at NAIC.

NAIC has 23 bulls capable of producing between 10 – 15 thousand inseminations vials annually and  plans are underway  to increase 10 bulls to their stock in order to meet increasing local and export demand.

The director said their bulls were of Ayrshire, Fresian, Jersey, Sahiwan, Mpwapwa and Boran of South African, Kenyan and Tanzanian origin.

Makundi listed some of the advantages of artificial insemination as reduced cost on the need to keep bulls and avoiding injuries on female animals on physical bull mounting as well as avoidance of genetically transmitted diseases..

Four sub-centres will soon be opened in Mbeya for the southern highlands, Mwanza for Lake zone, Dar es Salaam for coastal and eastern zone and Dodoma for the central zone.
