Volunteer stabbed trying to stop robber
Police arrest  murder suspect on the run

A murder suspect who has been on  the run for the last 20 months has been arrested in Arusha over a  recent violent attack on an American national in an Arusha street at night.  

Hussein Mbega (22) was picked by the police at his hideout at Unga Limited suburb on August 17, only a day after he allegedly stabbed an American volunteer with a knife during a robbery attempt along Sokoine Road.  

Then acting regional police commander Mr. Robert Boaz the suspect has been linked to the murder of Mr.Lenjabi Waziri at the same Unga Limited on January 14th, 2007.  

He said the late Waziri died after he was allegedly stabbed by Mbega at 3:45 pm on that day under circumstances which the regional police boss could not elaborate on.  

"After the killing he has been on the run and efforts to nab him have failed. Now we have found him and we will take him to court for murder case and attack on the American," he said.  

According to the police, an American volunteer identified as Ashish Shah (19) was on the evening  of August 16 this year attacked by four people while walking along the Sokoine Road with four young ladies from the UK.  

The four suspected criminals tried to grab the bag of one of the girls during the 8:30 pm incident along the busy street but Shah, a student of New York University at Long Island, struggled to stop the robbery.  

In the ensuing struggle, he was stabbed several times in the body with a knife by the gangsters who later took to their heels after the ladies screamed for help.  

People who rushed to the scene managed to arrest one Emmanuel Fadhili (17), a resident of Unga Limited, a crime prone and highly populated area on the southern fringes of Arusha.  

During interrogation, Fadhili admitted taking part in the attack and told police that it was Mbega who used the knife to attack the American visitor during a failed robbery. 

The following day police combed the area and managed to arrest the suspect. He was in possession of the knife when he was nabbed by the law enforcers.  

The critically injured Shah was later rushed to the Selian Lutheran Hospital at Ngaramtoni along the Namanga road for treatment from several wounds inflicted on his body.  

His parents flew into the country from the US on Monday  and took their injured son back home.

Sinon resident faces armed robbery charges

A resident of Sinon area, Daraja Mbili within Arusha region has been charged with armed robbery and stealing various items valued at Tsh.730,000, the property of Milton Jacob.

The accused, Ringo Andrea (27) is alleged to have committed the offence on April 23 this year at about 7.30pm at Daraja Mbili in Arusha region.

The accused is alleged to have stolen six pieces of Tanzanite gemstone valued at Tsh.250,000, one mobile phone valued at Tsh.330,000 and cash money Tsh.150,000 all with a total value of Tsh.730,000.

The prosecutor, Inspector Shamy Dunia pressed the charges before Resident Magistrate, Abdallah Mkama on August 27 this year.

It was alleged that before the time of such stealing the accused did use a knife  and piece of iron bar to threaten his victim.

The accused denied the charges and he is still under  custody until September 8 this year when his case will be mentioned again

Gangsters target orphanages

While Good Samaritan are struggling to house and feed orphan children, undesirable elements in both Arusha and Moshi are all out to inflict misery to the already disadvantaged children.

In Moshi last week bandits stormed into the premises of Ukombozi, a child advocacy agency helping vulnerable children achieve a decent life, brutally killed a guard and made away with some items.

The office was burglarized at 2.00am on Tuesday, August 19 and a guard of Ultimate Security, Shambani Mndolwa was brutally attacked with what is believed to be an iron pipe.

“His skull was severely fractured and he was found unconscious by his colleagues from Ultimate Security. Shambani never woke from his unconscious state,” says a press release from Mkombozi.

The gangsters made away with several computers after breaking into two offices and one car.

Elsewhere in Arusha on Sunday, August 31, thugs broke into Paradiso Mpya, a home for orphan children and stole 21 cartons of soap, 10 bed sheets and 10 blankets.

The orphanage located at Lemara, south of the municipality was established in 2006 and now has 18 resident orphans.

Christopher Kaaya, founder of the Home said the incident occurred while the orphanage was still grappling with teething problems.

He said the orphanage is in dire need of furniture, food, money for rent and  utility bills, allowances for tenants, among others.

Man found dead in siesta

Daniel John (30) a resident of Ilboru area in Arumeru district was on August 31 at 6 pm found dead on his bed by  his friends.

According to the Arusha Regional Police Commander Matei Basilio, one of the companions, Flora Herman (45) who had gone to check on John after an extended siesta found him dead.

The incident was reported to police who immediately arrived at scene for preliminary observations and collection of the body for further forensic checks.

The body was kept at the Mount Meru hospital morgue awaiting burial arrangements.

Woman commits suicide in her kitchen

Eda Sinji (65) a resident of Olasiti was on August 27 at 4 pm found dead hanging from her shawl in her kitchen.

According to the Arusha Regional Police Commander Matei Basilio, Eda was mentally deranged for a long time.

Prior to her suicide her relatives had suspected her moves and had taken measures of surveillance. They then relaxed their vigil on the fateful day after being satisfied her situation was tranquil only to find  her hanging from the kitchen roof later.

Her remains are at the Mount Meru hospital morgue awaiting burial arrangements.

Police hold car thefts suspect

Police in Arusha have arrested Joseph Valerian Chuwa (42)  a resident of KCMC area in Moshi  on suspicion of masterminding  car thefts. He was arrested at Mianzini area on August 31 at 3.30pm.

Arusha’s Regional Police Commander Basilio Matei, told reporters that police who

Were acting on a tip off from law abiding citizens, searched and found him  in possession of car chassis numbers, engine numbers, number plates, a hammer, screw driver, a motor grinder and variety of wiring materials.

On questioning, Chuwa allegedly acknowledged his involvement in defacing chassis, engine numbers and number plates and substituting them with fake ones.  He reportedly did that for stolen cars to make them untraceable.

Chuwa also said his ‘business’ was based in Dar es Salaam but shifted to Arusha recently to explore greener pastures.

He also listed a number of accomplices who are being traced by police.

Mechanic killed in armed robbery

Apolinary Fredrick Kawawa, 40,  a resident of  Sekei  has been shot dead  by armed robbers who had broken into a shop in Sanawari area where the victim operates a   roadside  car repair shop[.

An armed gang of six raided a nearby shop and  fired several times.  When Kawawa  rushed out to see what was happening, he was shot in the chest point blank.  Another person Paulo Frederick  who was at  the shop buying items was  shot in the leg.

The gangsters, according to the police made away with Tsh.320,000 in cash.

Armed robberies are now commonplace in all parts of Arusha town especially  its outskirts.
