AMC built only one km of paved road in 7 years By Wankyo Gatti The Arusha Municipal Council has managed to add only one Kilometre of tarmac road to its urban network in a period of seven years, it was learned recently. The distance of tarmac road, according to an official report from the council, has increased from 3 km in 2001 to 4.5 km in 2008 which means there have been an addition of only 1.5 km of tarmac road for the last seven years. ‘New roads’ that have been constructed in town for the past seven years add up to only 2.5 kilometers and these are just beaten up tracks filled with murram. Non-tarmac roads that have undergone maintenance add up to some 14 kilometers which is an additional 12 Km from just 2 km in 2001. The council also claims to have constructed two bridges since 2001. The number of road culverts on the other hand has risen from 80 in 2001 to around 300 in 2008. Within the same period the council’s engineering department has seen to it that eight drainage trenches have been constructed in town while gravel filled roads have been increased from 30 km in 2001 to around 120 km this year, according to the report. Between 2001 and 2008 the council has added 31more Zebra crossing signs in town whose number now reaches 33 from the just 2 that had been in existence here by 2001. The number of street lamps currently stands at 210. Arusha Municipality has a total of 310 kilometers of road networks, but some of these are under the National Road Agency (TANROADS). Out of these there are 64 kilometers of paved roads, 50 kilometers of gravel roads and 196 kilometers of earth roads.
