Holy Communion parties cost
huge fortunes but all in vain, because contrary to what parents
believe, the events never make their children or themselves any
popular. In fact most become quite unpopular once their children
drop out of school after failing to settle fees.
People here like to imitate
what their neighbors are doing and will go to any length
including selling properties, acquiring loans and sacrificing
their children’s education in order to make good front when it
comes to organizing such parties.

I don’t
care about parties held to boost people’s egos and the huge
expenditures that go with them, but these ‘ubarikio’ fetes are
becoming a pain in the neighborhood. They choke traffic, while
the off-tune trumpets are currently major sources of noise
pollution, and then come the all-night music binges.
It all
adds up to massive headaches, people drink themselves stupid and
the celebrations held in the name of church communion turn into
satanic rituals, people fight, kids get to taste alcohol and
raunchy music and at the end of the day, the family is broke.
