‘Ubarikio!,’ Bonfires of  vanities?

They are supposed to be church events, but the noisy, costly eating and drinking binges known as ‘Ubarikio’ are raising questions regarding their holiness.

by Raymond John

Most people seem to be investing fortunes in organizing Holy Communion parties, forgetting that there is still life after the celebrations and the children will require school fees in January.

If you love your children then forget about investing huge sums of money in celebrating their church holidays, instead open bank accounts for them, the money will come handy in future. Either that or put it aside to pay for their school fees.

These holy communion parties are not only useless, but the children themselves will never appreciate them once they grow up. In fact, most will be embarrassed by such memories. There is nothing wrong with parties, but they shouldn’t be held at somebody else’s expenses and they should not be as lavish.

Most parents are rather reluctant to pay school fees for their children but would be happy to invest in huge sumptuous parties in the name of ‘Ubarikio!’ The parties are more of blasphemy affair than blessing.

Holy Communion parties cost huge fortunes but all in vain, because contrary to what parents believe, the events never make their children or themselves any popular. In fact most become quite unpopular once their children drop out of school after failing to settle fees.

People here like to imitate what their neighbors are doing and will go to any length including selling properties, acquiring loans and sacrificing their children’s education in order to make good front when it comes to organizing such parties.

I don’t care about parties held to boost people’s egos and the huge expenditures that go with them, but these ‘ubarikio’ fetes are becoming a pain in the neighborhood. They choke traffic, while the off-tune trumpets are currently major sources of noise pollution, and then come the all-night music binges.

It all adds up to massive headaches, people drink themselves stupid and the celebrations held in the name of church communion turn into satanic rituals, people fight, kids get to taste alcohol and raunchy music and at the end of the day, the family is broke.
