Dinning out

A cut above the rest

My friend and I had arranged an adventure out of the Arusha's Central Business District [CBD] and needed somewhere to have a quick meal. I was glad I stumbled across many eating places I have visited in the recent past and found the Big Y Club. This place is a real find.

This is the type of outing that could well be perfect for Arusha both visitors and residents. Dining at the Big Y club is a reasonable opportunity to escape the hustle-and-bustle of the A town and get a sense of the natural beauty that permeates up-country, better still without the hours-long drive on bumpy roads.

We didn't book, and they were full when we arrived, so with regret we started walking away. But a man, whom we came to learn that he is the manager, said we could find a table in the expanded part of the club. We did, and they did!

And from the look of it, the club is ready for visitors. The seating has now been expanded to hold close to a hundred clients. The readiness is a commendable. The recent works have simply added to the beautiful scenery. The two most visible changes are newly created open-air garden and an enough parking space that connects to the garden.

Situated in the middle of one of the sprawling countryside parts of Sekei suburb in Arusha, it's charming, unpretentious and most important reasonably priced, is a tick for this intriguing place.

On being seated there was a healthy aura of happy relaxation and the customers who were all varying in age, seemed to be enjoying themselves. The menu was simple with variation to appeal to all tastes, nothing you had to question. It was there in black-and-white, and in plain English.

The promise of fresh seasonable produce by the owner Mr. Stephen Laizer left us salivating at the thought of rustic earthy flavours. The food was good. My steak was the best, huge and hearty too. It was hot, delicious expertly cooked and all that. It came with a salad, beautifully dressed but much too much food for me.

The setting is Idyllic with no-frills. The club has stayed true to its origins and simply delivers first-class food in a relaxing and easy going atmosphere. Food is reflected in the quality of the produce used.

"It's what a good destination club should be about" my friend summed it up as we left the place.
