AUWSA brags success in water supply by Wankyo Gati The Arusha Water and Sewerage Authority (AUWSA) has succeeded to raise its water bills collection from Tsh.2.5 billion in 2004/5 to Tsh.3.3 billion in 2006/7 and its customers have increased from 20,744 in 2004/5 to 24,051 in 2006/7. Engineer Asili Munisi, AUWSA’s Managing Director said at the swearing in of new board members and saying goodbye to the old board members that availability of safe water supply in Arusha has increased by 40 per cent. Eng. Munisi said the increase on capacity of water supply came from maintenance/repairs of old water sources as well as opening of a new source at river Nduruma that enabled the supply volume to increase from cubic metres 11.3 million in 2004/5 to 15 million cubic meters in 2006/7. He said, therefore the residents with safe water supply make up 97.5 per cent and the sewerage services is accessed by 14.07 per cent of all residents. The managing director announced new projects of drilling other two boreholes at Kiranyi and Ilkiroti and set up a gradient water in-take at the source of river Malala as well as expand the municipal sewerage system. He called on the wananchi to contribute and attract funds from the regional authorities to build the Malala in-take. He then called on all the stakeholders and the customers to pay their bills on time, ensure safety of water supply system and help control cheating in water bills by by-passing metres. The new board members were issued with working tools at the ceremony to enable them carry out their duties effectively.
