Drugs without borders

By Staff Reporter

Drug addiction and trafficking which is a major problem among the youth in Arusha does not only end within the boundaries of Arusha. The problem extends southwards.

Twenty seven Tanzanians are now languishing in South African jails for drug trafficking and other offences.

According to Tanzania’s High Commissioner to South Africa Ambassador Emanuel Mwambulukutu most Tanzanian youth who travel to South Africa are involved in illicit drug trade. He warned that the situation was getting worse.

"My office is aware of the 27 Tanzanians who are jailed in various prisons in South Africa, but there is nothing we can do to help them out," said Mr Mwambulukutu.

He said the inmates’ request to serve their sentences in Tanzania cannot be granted, because the two countries have no agreement regarding the exchange of prisoners.

Most of the youth reportedly entered South Africa using unofficial routes via the border with Mozambique, hoping to secure employment in the continent’s biggest economy.

The High Commissioner challenged parents to educate their children that there are no employment opportunities in South Africa unless one is a doctor, engineer or computer programmer.
