A journey in time by Elisha Mayallah Last week when I visited the Countryside Pub Moshono my idea was to spend some few hours on a battery recharge mission, but it didn't work out like that. I found the place packed with pre-wedding and fund-raising meetings. Eventually, I found myself busier than I expected. The sense of light and airiness was liberating as we pulled over at the Pub's infinity sprawling gardens. It is where a clever allusion leads you to believe that the gardens start at the gate and reaches out to the far hazy horizon of Mount Meru. Months of persistent rain have left the usually sun-scorched area lush and verdant, with the countryside terrain offering a beautiful shade of green. My impressions were confirmed by Mr. Jeff Mligha, the owner, who spoke at length about the natural beauty of the area, occasionally dropping in snippets of historic information. "Here it is not only the customer who is a king but also civility. We pride in having a decent place where decent people relax away from the bustling town," said Jeff. Besides running and owning the Pub Mr. Jeff is a serious farmer and is a tour operator based in Arusha. During the tour he was most helpful and patient in showing us around and pointing out items and areas of particular interest. For most of the year the Pub is populated with affluent people seeking good weather, fine dining, first-class outdoor meeting settings and sophisticated evening entertainment for up to 300 people. This Pub tucked away in lush vegetation at Moshono, could easily be included on the list of attractions of the growing town of Arusha. And here lies much of its appeal - a gem of a destination just waiting to be uncovered by those with the time and inclination to experience more than the usual tourist merry-go-round. To get there one need to drive to the Impala hotel round about and head on the Old Moshi road for nearly four kilometres on a paved road. A sign will lead you to branch over while the line of trees from the roadside will lead your most adventurous eye to discovering the place. Perhaps the Pub's greatest achievement is its kitchen, which is guaranteed to leave you invigorated and relaxed. We enjoyed superb food spread out in a buffet setting in the elegant sprawling gardens. The expertly cooked food left us salivating and gloating. The truth turned out to be far stranger, more varied and tastier than we had expected. It was unbelievable when Mr. Jeff Mligha told us on how they once prepared and cooked food for 100 people at a short notice of two hours! Otherwise grilled goat, beef and chicken are the usual menus at the Pub. For those craving with buds of beef skewers and boiled chicken or beef need not worry as their menu is inclusive. Judging by the presence of the people on our day of discovery people of a wide demographic patronized the Pub. People of all walks of life spanning from 18 to 80 years old dressed the part of a merry group who met with their friends to get the party going. Such a scale, I thought, is a result of a degree of impersonality with courteous staff who relentlessly ensure that visitors never feel lost or isolated, a tribute to those involved. Here I found nearly all staff are deservedly proud of their property and its surroundings. It is an experience you won't easily replicate elsewhere in Arusha and for this reason, it is worth a visit.
