The Golden Rose Unpretentious and Palatable ![]() Golden Rose's restaurant chef, Cosmas Our Correspondent The Golden Rose restaurant is located inside the Golden Rose Hotel, in the building next door to the Golden Rose Conference Center. And right there in the table there was…you guessed it…a couple of golden roses. I really recommend that tourists venture out to the neighborhood of the Golden Rose if nothing more than an exercise in getting out of the normal tourist district and into a part of town where things are really happening, where life is being lived without much concern about safaris and batiks and chintzy beaded curios. The Golden Rose is in the general vicinity of the Central Bus Stand, though it's a half dozen blocks away. This part of town is bustling, and because it is bustling, it is fairly interesting to walk around. Not too far away is the football (soccer) stadium, one is encouraged to have a look-see at that as well. Anyhow, once seated inside the restaurant, Cosmas the chef came and had a short chat with me. He was a delightful man, and he has previously worked as a chef at Hotel 77 and the Impala Hotel. His warm hospitality delighted me and my beautiful date. he menu seemed to cover a variety of cuisines. There were a couple of soups offered: chicken noodle and cream of carrot. The menu is so full of decent sounding items that I might as well jump right in and list some of the goodies. Avocado Mombassa, a chicken salad looked delicious on the menu. Prawn masala, grilled fillet of steak, braised mutton, grilled pork chops, grilled king fish, garlic prawns, all sounded like they had great potential. All main dishes are served with rice or potatoes, seasonal vegetables and salad. The Asian menu includes chicken with ginger and honey as well as shredded beef Cantonese. Tanzanian food including ugali, veggies, and fried chicken are also available. Vegetarians might be excited to learn that Spaghetti Napolitano is on the menu—extra veggies can be added to your tomato sauce. Also noteworthy is a creative version of vegetable enchiladas, which comes with a side salad and rice. Finally, for dessert one could pick either Crepes Suzzette which the menu describes as a sweet pancake topped with Grand Marnier sauce or banana fritters served with a custard sauce. Please feel free to saunter around town and stop in at the Golden Rose for lunch or dinner.
