The Secretary General of the East African Community, Ambassador Juma Mwapachu has hailed the appointment of Justice Augustino Ramdhani as new Chief Justice of the United Republic of Tanzania.

"This position at the pinnacle of the Tanzanian justice system is a well deserved honour and recognition of your longstanding, distinguished and dignified service to the Tanzanian legal and judicial system," according to a message addressed to the Chief Justice.

Ambassador Mwapachu noted that the appointment came at a crucial period of Tanzania’s transition to a robust liberal market economy with the major underpinnings of her unique tradition and commitment to social justice and entrenchment of an egalitarian society.

"Indeed, a brave new world is discernible in the evolution of Tanzanian enterprise and competitiveness within the East African integration process as well as the inexorable march of globalization," he said.

The congratulatory message written on behalf of the East African Community further says: " Equally challenging is the consolidation of political pluralism with its attendant requirements of good governance and political fair play. The judicial system has a frontline role to play in managing these new developments and giving the citizenry the hope and trust about the efficacy and effectiveness of the rule of law.

Justice Ramadhani was on July 17 announced new Chief Justice to replace Justice Barnabas Samatta whose tenure of office has expired.

Before his new appointment Justice Ramadhani was Judge of the Appeal Court of Tanzania, Judge of the East African Court of Justice and Vice Chairman of the National Electoral  Commission of Tanzania.
