20 – 20 cricket bats off  with etra flavor

A fine throw at the launch of 20-20 cricket.

By Hameed Sherriff

Jubilee Insurance sponsored 20 – 20 overs cricket competition started on Sunday, July 15. Kilimeru and Swamibapa won their opening games in style at the Fredkins Recreation Center.  This is the second year running that Jubilee Insurance  are sponsoring this form of the game, but have brought extra flavor by providing cricket shirts with different coloured collars for every team.

In the first game of the day, Kilimeru were put into bat by Expats, and were soon flying as their batsmen piled up a good 124 runs in the allotted 20 overs for the loss of only 6 wickets.    This was mainly due to some  selective stroke making coupled with good running between the wickets by the Kilimeru youngsters towards the end.

Husein Kermalli top scored with 28, while there were contributions from Hameed Sheriff with 26, and Mohamedraza Lalji with 22.  Facing this big total, Expats wickets tumbled at very regular intervals, as Kilimeru finished them off in the 16th over for only 67 runs on the board.  Expats captained bowled well for his 2 wickets for 27 runs, while Mustafa Sheriff and Ali Jawaad both picked up 3 wickets for Kilimeru.

At 1.30pm, Swamibapa elected to bat first against the defending champions Annadil Ezzi.  Their batsmen proved their decision a good one, by posting 123 runs on the board in 20 overs for the loss of 8 wickets.  Young Rohit with 28 runs  and Shyam with 22 runs put in a good foundation with 57 on the board in 8 overs, which was then capitalized by captain Hiren Patel who hit a breezy 42 runs.

Veteran Seifee was Annadil’s best bowler with 3 wickets for 21 runs.  Mufaddal Salem with 32 and Ali Chomoco with 16 were the only players who put in some resistance, as Annadil crumbled for only 77 runs, due to some very good bowling by Swamibapa, whose prize bowler was young Muzammil who hauled 3 wicket for only 7 runs.

On Sunday July  22, Swamibapa play Expats in the morning and Annadil take on Kilimeru in the afternoon.
