Malasusa new
ELCT Presiding Bishop by Staff Reporter The Assembly of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT) has elected Bishop Alex Gehaz Malasusa (47) Presiding Bishop of the ELCT for the next four years. The election took place July 18 when the Executive Council of the Church presented before the assembly names of three contestants. Bishop Malasusa scooped 132 out of 184 votes cast while Bishop Dr. Owdenburg Mdegella got 35 votes and Bishop Dr. Steven Munga 17. Malasusa replaces Dr. Samson Mushemba whose term as Presiding Bishop expired in July this year. Born 18 June1960, Malasusa hails from Rungwe, Mbeya Region is a son of a pastor and the youngest Presiding Bishop so far. Apart from Mushemba others were the late Bishop Dr. Sebastian Kolowa and the late Bishop Stephano Moshi. He is holder of Bachelor of Divinity Degree from the Makumira University College. He became a pastor in 1992 and was consecrated Bishop of the East and Coastal Diocese on April 17 2004.
