![]() The Late Dr. Japhet Urasa by Staff Reporter Most Arushans are still to come to terms with the death of Dr. Japhet Urasa who died suddenly on June 23 and laid to rest at his home in Machame on June 28 this year. Although an accomplished, seasoned and respected doctor, he preferred to be referred as a farmer, musician and doctor, in that order. Dr. Urasa, FRCS, was born on 3rd January 1934. He received his primary school education at Nkuu Primary School, Machame and thereafter secondary education at Ilboru Secondary School and Tabora Boys High School. He attended medical school at Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda, where he was an outstanding student and attained his MBChB degree. He then qualified as a surgeon at the University of London and at the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinborough, earning the prestigious Fellow Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS). Dr. Urasa worked at the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in England before returning home. His first appointment was at Muhimbili National Hospital (then St. Margaret’s Hospital). He held various government posts such as surgeon and lecturer at Muhimbili National Hospital, Regional Medical Officer for Morogoro and Arusha before joining KCMC as the first African surgeon. At KCMC, Dr. Urasa was among the pioneers of various surgical training programmes, as well as establishment of the Surgical ICU. He left KCMC in 1974 to establish his private practice "The Old Arusha Clinic" in Arusha but still found time to drive to Machame, and play piano on Sunday in his local church. He was married to Mrs Bassilla Renju-Urasa and had five children: Anita, Dr. David Urasa, Dr. Nsiande Urasa, Dr. Sarah Urasa and Dr. Miriam Urasa. He will be sadly missed and greatly remembered for his
commitment, compassion and competence at home, work, as well as
socially. |
