AICC gears up to promote congress tourism
By Staff Reporter
The Arusha International Conference is bracing to step up its role in the promotion of congress tourism business. The initiative will see an increased number of international and local organizations holding conventions in Arusha and taking advantage of the tourists attractions at Arusha’s doorstep.
This was resolved during the Centre’s 95th Board meeting held on Monday, June 4 in Arusha which approved the AICC’s 5 year Strategic Plan for 2007/2008-2011/2012.
The main focus of the Plan is to transform AICC from the current position into a more vibrant organization with increased role in the country’s promotion of congress tourism business for enhanced national socio-economic development.
The new approach takes into account, the need for establishment of a new “purposely –built” convention centre in Tanzania, according to a statement issued after the board meeting.
It was also resolved to harmonize the existing managerial positions from the current system whereby the Managing Director is immediately assisted by four departmental managers instead of directors.
The new system will now have the managing director as the chief executive officer backed by 4 directors heading the four respective departments of Conferences and Marketing, Estates, Hospital Services and Finance and Administration.
Holders of the post are: Elishilia Kaaya - Managing Director; James Mgani - Director of Conferences and Marketing; Francis Kulwa- Director of Estates; Savo Mung’ong’o - Director of Finance and Administration; and Dr. Julius Chihowachi - Acting Director of Hospital Services.
Mr. Mung’ong’o was confirmed to the post of Director of Finance and Administration with effect from June 4, this year. Prior to his appointment, Mr. Mung’ong’o was the Acting Finance and Administration Manager for a period of more than one and half years.
The Centre established about 30 years ago, has various conference halls & rooms to cater for conferences, workshops, seminars, and committee meetings varying from 10 to 1000 delegates. Most of these rooms are equipped with Simultaneous Interpretation Systems (SIS) of up to four (4) languages
