Courts/Police Log All stories by Happy Lazaro Police bust network of gangsters Police in Arusha have netted nine gangsters in two separate incidents through cooperation of local residents. In the first incident four gangsters holed at Songambele village, Mererani were arrested on May 30 in possession of a sub-machine gun (SMG) numbered 56-131004844 with nine rounds of ammunition. Police who were acting on a tip off went to Mererani and visited the reported hideout but found no one inside, but at about 7 pm one of the gangsters, Mohamed Ally alias Babuu (52) arrived and police closed in on him and forced him to show where they hid guns. Momentarily, he showed the police an SMG hidden in water can. On police interrogation, Babuu explained he had three other accomplices with whom he was "working" in Arusha and Moshi municipalities. One of them lived at Mererani going by name of Omari Ibrahim. The other two: Mchinii Thomas (35), Maliaki Bari alias Rasta (32) both residents of Unga Limited were traced and arrested. The Arusha Regional Police Commander (RPC), Basilio Matei told reporters that Babuu and his gang had a " strategic programme"of house breaking in Arusha for which he had been sent to collect the firearm that night. The RPC said all will appear in court to answer charges as soon as investigations are over. In another operation police arrested five suspected gangsters in Majengo Saccon on May 18. Police first arrested a jailbird gangster, Ishumari Nicholaus alias Tumbonii (41) resident of Kimandolu and "commander" of gang called "Kanyaga Twende". Ishumari according to the RPC had finished a five-year jail term only on April 30 over the same type of crime. On police interrogation Ishumari led police to Raskazon bar in Sakina to collect stolen items he had hid there. The items include electronic musical equipment and a knife.

Con artist signs off computers consignment A self-styled con artist, claiming he is from the highly reputed MS Training Centre for Development Cooperation, has hit Arusha town signing off consignments from shops. His reported stop was a shop called "Computer World" in the municipality of Arusha where he concluded a "deal" worth Tsh.6,735,000 vide a fake CRDB bank cheque numbered 405754. The ripoff according to the police occurred May15 but the incident was reported to them on May 30. The con man "bought" four Laptop computers and a desk top one from the shop attendant, one Japhed Bhalo (26) of Njiro where the shop is based. Bhalo said he didn’t suspect the "customer"as the MS Centre people were their regular computer customers. He however could not recall how the con artist looked like. The Arusha Regional Police Commander, Basilio Matei, told reporters that Bhalo discovered that he had been conned when he tried to present the "cheque" at the CRDB branch.
Buffalo meat turns sour Meat is meat even when it is buffalo meat, only that the latter can put you in trouble. A Ngurdoto resident in Arumeru district is facing charges of being found with buffalo meat worth Tsh.500,000 deemed property of the Tanzanian government. The accused, Neema Paulo (40) is alleged to have committed the offence on May 25 this year at about 2.00pm at Ngurdoto village in Arumeru district. Prosecutor, Shamy Dunia pressed the charges before Resident Magistrate Sundi Fimbo on May 30. The accused is alleged to have been found on his possession buffalo meat contrary to the laws of the country. Accused denied the charges and he is still under custody until June 13 this year when his case will be mentioned again.
Taxi driver rapes wife’s sister A thirty one-year- old taxi driver of Kijenge has allegedly raped his 19-year-old sister-in-law on June3 at 8 pm inside his taxi parked at Philips area in the municipality. The Arusha Regional Police Commander (RPC), Basilio Matei told reporters that the cabbie drove his taxi to his place that evening and asked his sister-in-law to go with him to collect luggage from town. On the way, he parked the car at Philips area and allegedly proceeded to rape the girl while gagging her. The victim reported the incident to her sister on return home and the next day the two sisters reported the incident to police who immediately arrested the taxi driver. He is under investigations before being arraigned in court. Meanwhile, a motorist Joel Girisha (49) resident of Majengo in Moshi is in police hands after allegedly knocking down to death a pedestrian at Mti Mmoja area along Arusha-Dodoma road on June 3 at 8 pm. He was driving a Toyota Hilux registration number T117 ADD. Joel will also appear in court after police investigations.
Man held in connection with TV set theft Mji Mwema resident at Usa River area within Arumeru district is facing charges of breaking and entering into a house and stealing there in various items valued at Tsh.290,000, property of Yuda Michael. Inspector Theopista Mallya read the charges before Resident Magistrate Sundi Fimbo on May 30 this year. The accused is alleged to have committed the offence on May 20 this year at about 11.00pm at Usa River area in Arumeru district. The accused is alleged to have stolen a TV set valued at Tsh.175,000 and a cassette deck valued at Tsh.115,000. The accused denied the charges and he is still under custody until June 12 this year when his case will be mentioned again.
16 Pakistanis nabbed at Kimandolu Immigration authorities in Arusha have nabbed 16 Pakistanis who allegedly entered the country illegally. The Arusha Regional Immigration Officer, Mr Justine Kabigumira told the Daily News on Tuesday that the aliens were nabbed at a house situated near Klub Afriko in Kimadolu area following a tip off from an informer. He said some of the aliens had their passports stamped showing they entered the country through the Mwalimu Nyerere International Airport. Others failed to produce any traveling documents. The immigration department and other security organs are questioning the landlord of the house, identified by one name Eben and his wife Anna. "So far we don’t know their motives, but we’re questioning all of them," he said. Meanwhile, Ranger Safaris Personnel Manager and Legal Officer, Fadhili Makumba (28), was yesterday arraigned to court here to answer charges of soliciting and receiving a bribe. He denied the charges. Makumba was nabbed last week by the Prevention of Corruption Bureau (PCB) allegedly for accepting a bribe of 30,000/- from a co-worker to influence reinstatement or payment of retirement benefits to a worker with the same company.
