Street Talk

Arusha, the prince of darkness !

The town hosts the UN -sponsored, International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) the Commonwealth Regional Health Community Secretariat, a branch of the International Postal Union and the East African Community secretariat, in addition to being Tanzania’s tourism capital. Arusha seems to have everything ... Well, except ‘Street and traffic lights!’

By Raymond John

Arusha town lacks many things but the absence of street lights is what causes the most concern around here. This is the country’s show case, where international visitors and delegates flock practically everyday, not to mention almost all Tanzanian bound tourists.

Dark nights make every person vulnerable to thieves, pick-pockets, rapists and robbers. On the other hand, the shoddy drainage systems, with their uncovered manholes become death-traps at night due to lack of street lights.

Arusha is a fast growing urban center which means, it is in dire need of not only ‘street lights’ , but also traffic lights to help control the fast growing number of vehicles that now fight for space on the single, yet very narrow road and even narrower streets.

Junctions such as Mianzini, Sanawari and Philips become standstill every evening and morning and due to lack of traffic lights and signs, pedestrians have to fight for their way through while risking their lives.

If Arusha is going to be a city, as stories go, then street lights are very much needed here. The Municipal council is yet to see the importance of lights during the night, because there are some roads with lamp posts and bulb holders but the municipal officials don’t even bother to fix them with light bulbs.

We appeal to local business people or institutions to install lights outside their premises to help ease the problem. General Tyre (EA) is a good example of what local investors can do. The factory has helped to light up part of Njiro road.

The fame that Arusha enjoys countrywide is contrary to the pathetic condition that its infrastructure seem to be in. Lack of street-lights system is such an example. People fear to walk about in Arusha at dusk as you can easily be mugged, attacked or even fall in gulleys due to pitch darkness which seem to rule here whenever the sun goes down.
