25 Athletes for Zone Five senior
championships by Matilda Kirenga Tanzania is sending a team of 25 athletes to participate in Eastern and Central Africa Zone Five senior championships to be held on May 30 in Uganda. Tanzania’s national athletics coach, Alfredo Shahanga told this reporter at the Sheikh Amri Abeid Stadium where the team was training this week that other athletes for the championships would come form Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Somalia, Eritrea, Sudan, Djibouti and Zanzibar. Shahanga said his team of 25 was selected trough the national championships drawing participants from different athletic clubs from all over the country. The zone five championships will feature events such as 100 metre run; 200 metres; 400, 800, 1500, 5000 and 10,000 metres. Others will be shot put, discuss, high and long jump and relays. Shahanga listed 100metres/men stars in the national team selection games as: Lista Matonya of Prisons who clocked 10.9 seconds, Masatu Laurence of JWTZ - 11.2 seconds and Omar Mbaruk of Arusha - 11.5 seconds. Women winners in 100 metres were Verdiana Joseph -JWTZ (13.1 seconds); and Siata Romanus - JWTZ (13.4 seconds). In 800 metres women stars were: Jackline Sahilu T100 - clocking 2.16.74; Rwiza John (National) - 2.16.90 and Halima Ramadhani T100 - 2.22.71. Men winners in 800 metres were: Oscar Wilfred (Dar es Salaam) - 1.57.12; Samson Kaura of Prisons - 1.58.16 and Enock Benjamin also of Prisons 1.59.91. In the 1500 metres run, men winners were Samwel Kwa’ang’w (Prisons) - 14.21.54; Naftal Dakho (Arusha) - 14.48.92 and - Patrick Nyangero (Arusha) - 14.50.91. Women winners for 1500 metres were Janeth John (TSA) -16.45.37; Zaituni John (T100) - 16.45.56 and Natalia Elisante (T100) - 16.58.93. Men stars in 10,000 metres were: Martin Hilonga (Arusha) - 30.15.12; Isaya Deeng’w (Arusha) - 30.29.29 and Ezekiel Jaffer (JKT) who clocked 30.32.70. Zone Five junior championships were held in Arusha last month where Sudan became overall winners followed by Kenya and Zanzibar (second and third respectively). Tanzania came fourth in those championships.
