national teams by Matilda Kirenga Seven Compassion centres participated in football and netball matches last week at the Sheikh Amri Abeid Stadium in the bid to select crack teams of national Compassion players Compassion games coordinator, Mosses Mollel told this reporter that Compassion which serves disadvantaged children from poor families decided to run the competitions to identify sports talents among those children. Another objective was to make the children feel equal to their more fortunate counterparts. Mollel listed the seven participating centres as Tanzania Assemblies of God (TAG) Azimio, Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania (ELCT) - Engarenarok Parish; Saint Steven, Baptist, PEFA, Morovian and AICT Majengo, all ran by church organizations within the municipality of Arusha. He explained that the outfits used to have only centres/cluster teams but now it has been decided to have national compassion teams. The games will ease selection of boys of under 17 years of age in other national competitions. Girls will also enjoy exposure through netball competitions. Compassion has been providing services such as food, accommodation, clothing and education and has now decided to expand services to cover fine art, poetry and music. The results of the football competition were: ELCT-Engarenarok won 2-1 against Saint Steven; AICT Majengo won 2-1 against TAG Azimio. Morovian 4 to 2 over PEFA. Baptist lost 2-1 to ELECT Engarenarok. 22 star players were chosen to make up a Compassion national netball girls team.
