University organises fund raising meet
By Matilda Kirenga Arusha University has plans to establish a centre for HIV/AIDS counselling, whose construction cost is estimated at Tshs. 100 million. Speaking to reporters recently, the University’s Vice Chancellor, Mathias Mavanza said that the Centre will also be used by residents living in the neighbourhood of the college. The centre will assist the students as well as the community around the college in providing education on HIV/AIDS pandemic and other sexual diseases. "We cannot keep silent assuming that we are safe. We have thus resolved to have such centre and will be manned by professionals," said Mr. Mavanza. However, the college has no adequate funds to finance the project. He thus said that the University has scheduled a fund raising ceremony on May 27 to be led by the State Minister in the President’s Office Political Affairs, Mr. Kingunge Ngombale Mwiru. During the ceremony they are aiming to collect about Tshs. 1,058,000 for construction of various facilities including rain water harvesting, lecture rooms, dormitories, assembly hall and sports fields. The Arusha University College located in Arumeru District is under the auspices of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. It was registered in 2004 and currently it has 850 students.
