Saint Lucia to settle in larger nursing home

by Matilda Kirenga

Saint Lucia nursing home based in Kwangulelo in Arusha expects to inaugurate its newly constructed home worth Tsh.80 million situated at Moshono area.

The new structure that will serve HIV/AIDS positive adults and children was built though the sponsorship of the US- based Carama connection run by volunteer Costans Naba.

The building will house 20 children and eight adult males and females.

The nursing home founder, Winnefrida Mwashala said her centre had served over 280 patients since its inception in 2002. Out of those 30 lost their lives.

At present it cares for 20 resident HIV/AIDS positive children and offers home visit services to some 50 adult patients.

Mwashala said her centre’s research carried out 10 years ago showed that 50 per cent of HIV/AIDS patients were abandoned by their relatives and died in hospitals once they were proved positive.

Saint Lucia centre started training people on the effects of stigmatization. It was mainly ignorance and lack of awareness that led to people neglecting and mistreating their terminally ill family members and relatives.

Saint Lucia centre has been working closely with the Regional Hospital of Mount Meru and Saint Elizabeth Hospital where many of HIV/AIDS patients reported for treatment.
