Alive at 0.39 but denied he’d been drinking

By John B

I have seen the moth as it is drawn to the light, banging itself against the bulb until it falls, stunned; or worse, stuck onto a hot surface until it dies. With a candle, the moth will swoop into the open flame. It is mad passion that drives the moth to die.

I don’t understand what drives the moth to behave in such a manner, but I recognize I possess a similar madness in my addiction to alcohol and drugs as a moth is attached to the light. It was mindless futility, I would promise myself only one drink, but another followed and another. I’d lie to myself and those around me, how much I drank or doped. Without lying to ourselves, we would never have been capable of being alcoholics’ or addicts.

I have a friend who was picked up and brought to a hospital. His blood alcohol level was 0.39. At 0.10 a person is legally drunk, at 0.20 he should be unconscious and could die. At 0.39 my friend should have been dead, but years of drinking had hardened his body and kept alive. And this is where his story gets incredible when asked by the doctor how much he’d had to drink, my friend, still fully conscious and talking, denied he’d been drinking.

They repeated the blood test. There was no mistake. He was that drunk. And he was still denying it, to his doctor and to himself. Incredible that he and I are alive today because of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA).
