President Jakaya Kikwete

Painful sacrifices long overdue

Dear Editor

A recent guardian article carried President Kikwete’s hint on possible painful decisions to come, which will be of great benefit to the country, even though will be painful to a selected few. Of course this is a tune many citizens want to hear especially at this time when the country is gripped with fear of insecurity, poor living conditions, drought and starvation.

Indeed the  President’s words, were words of a true nationalist who is ready to die for the well being of his country, and we can only hope that the words from this promising, charismatic leader were heart felt considering the fact that, many African leaders laid very rosy pictures of how their leadership would turn things around to save a common man, not knowing they would live to be nothing but menace to their countries.

The current Kenya government for example, came into power with a promise to rid the country of corruption which marred previous regime, yet brought into the modern memory the most sophisticated and deeply rooted version of corruption within three years of its first term, a big shame and disappointment to the electorate and tax payers who are dying in large  numbers of starvation while their taxes funding lavish lifestyle of the few ruling elite

If the  president words can be put into action, it will be a sacrifice of its own kind, and will mean shunning his inner circle and cronies to save the country. This will mean making changes in the Public safety ministry as a whole to restore the sense of security which is now gone. It will mean reconsidering the allocation of millions to the government’s officials cruising in state of the art vehicles to fund our hospitals. It will also mean obligating all public officials to be accountable and also deliver on the promises to the electorate within a time frame else be shown the door.

Ultimate sacrifice and love for a country is not only an obligation of the top leadership, it is everyone’s duty. It is a responsibility of a common man to desist from handing bribes in order to be accorded citizenship rights. It is a duty of the every citizen to report to the authority those living amongst us while creating the sense of insecurity through the acts of violent robbery and terrorism. It is a responsibility of public officials to step aside when they fail to deliver and not to wait to be sacked or wait for mass action for the very reason of putting the country ahead of their own interest.

Ultimate sacrifice and painful decisions for the love of a country could not be told any better without telling a story  of a man I admire most, a man who never ruled but reigned in his own style, a man who died worth less than five dollars, yet left a country to be admired, a man of courage and tenacity, a man who challenged the mighty British empire, a simple man of from Porbandar India. Mahatma Ghandi is a role model of sacrifice for the good of a country.

Mr. Kikwete as a servant of the people, we are echoing and welcoming your comments as a true patriot, and nationalist who is ready to put aside his personal interest and implement painful sacrifices and changes for the well being of Tanzania, and may the citizenry give you their utmost support to effect the changes intended.
