Queen of Rubbish takes Kigongoni by storm

Welcome to Arusha's first "Rubbish" Show, were the first words sounded at an extravaganza of a show at Kigongoni Lodge on Sunday 12th February 2006.
The show organised by Lucy Swanbrow, Arusha's self-styled "Queen of Taka Taka" raised awareness of the problems of plastic bag waste in Arusha.
Many stalls were at the show featuring craft items made from re-cycled materials, including paper mache ornaments and toys.
Lucy and ladies from Sibusiso had made bags from taka taka (rubbish), maize sacks, old hessian, waste from the many tailoring industries in Arusha, and discarded plastic bags.
The day ended with an amazing catwalk fashion show, with all the clothes made from unwanted materials. And the models did look truly spectacular attracting an ovation from the audience.
Many people came to the event and money was raised (a grand sum of Tsh.250,000) to start small home industries using waste products to make new saleable items.
