By Staff Reporter The shortage of food facing the country is more acute than earlier estimated forcing Tanzania to ask for donor countries to assist in alleviating the problem. The government has asked for about 100,000 tonnes of relief food to those affected with the shortage mainly in the rural areas. Prime Minister Edward Lowassa told ambassadors from various countries in Dodoma on Monday that 3, 764,843 people are in need of food relief from this month until late April when the usual long rains are expected to cover most of the country. Last Sunday the Prime minister directed the Minister of State for Local Governments and Regional Administration Mr. Mizengo Pinda to go to Monduli district and neighbouring locations to verify reports of deaths of two persons due to hunger. It was reported by the media that hunger had claimed lives of two children in the district last week apparently for going without food for several days. Engikaret village chairman, Ngibile Ngilenyi is reported to have named the victims as six- year- old Naginyi Sukurubu and another child Lonity Lekitoni. Sources in the government said that the deaths are yet to be confirmed that they were due to hunger. The Prime Minister told the envoys that food situation in the country was alarming and that it required urgent measures to arrest the problem. Noting the persist drought affecting most parts of Tanzania, the Prime Minister requested donor countries to assist in enabling Tanzanian peasants improve agricultural productivity especially in irrigation as a long term solution to the recurring problem.
