Arusha Meru Secondary School

Thus ‘Academic & Modern School’ came into being in 1964.  A humble beginning, two streams, 36 students in each, one teacher, followed two more and temporarily housed in the Hindu Union Hall. In 1967 it moved to the old H.H. Aga Khan Primary School where the first batch of Form IV students graduated. In 1969 the first phase of the present infrastructure was built at a cost of Shs. 370,000.00 (comprising of generous lump sum donation of Shs. 156,790.00 given by the Trustees of Indian Community Fund). The school’s name was changed to Arusha Meru Secondary School and was officially opened by the then Minister of Education the Hon. Mr. C.Y. Mgonja.

The school has seen steady progress since then and the present sound infrastructure consist of 20 classrooms, a staff room, 3 science laboratories, a computer room, a canteen, offices, stores, 4 toilet blocks and 14 Staff houses The school provides education in both ‘A’ (over 1,000 enrolled) and ‘O’ Levels (over 10,000 enrolled) with an intake of approximately 600 students a year and has adequate sporting facilities - a football field, volleyball, netball and basketball courts. At the 30th Anniversary Celebrations held 12 years ago the former President of the United Republic, Al-Haj Ally Hassan Mwinyi, as the Guest of Honour, inaugurated a new set of housing for teachers consisting of 2 three bed room and 6 two room self contained flats to augment the existing 6 two bed room flats.

On that occasion late Mr. Sukhcharan Singh Grewal, one of the pioneers, the first Secretary/Manager and the Chairman until his death had this to say: “As we glance over the history of this institution, so young and yet so strong, so vulnerable and yet so determined, we can not but feel that it has been of immense benefit to Arusha and the Nation and we will venture to hope that it will continue to do so from generation to generation”

Arusha Meru Primary School

Now, as announced by Mr. Brij Behal, the Honorary Manager for the last 22 years, the present Management, to celebrate the 40th Anniversary, has embarked on a project to expand the present facilities on the campus by establishing a Primary school. Having English as the medium of instructions from Nursery, through to Standard VII will ensure that at the end of seven years of Primary Education pupils will have acquired and developed mastery of English, both spoken and written to cope with the English proficiency demands at Secondary Level. This will be a model English Medium Primary School. Centrally situated within City of Arusha and will be nucleus of an educational institution, striving to serve the children of the nation, where a child joins at infancy and gets his entire education up to ‘A’ Levels.

The construction of the school’s 1st phase is almost complete and will consist of the following: 8 Class Rooms, 1 Library, 1 Computer Room, 1 Staff Room, 1 Head Teachers Room, 2 Stores and 4 Toilet blocks. The 2nd phase will see the addition of 6 more Class Rooms making a total of 14.

Conclusion

One may ask as to who gave us the impetus to start, build and sustain this glorious enterprise? Non other than the pioneers and the people of Arusha with their ever timely offering of generous donations, the various Management Committees for their insight and personal sacrifices in giving their services absolutely voluntarily, the teachers and the staff for maintaining their ethics and the values of their noble profession, and the various headmasters for playing their part diligently in this grand undertaking. We salute them all and say thank you and asante sana.

Appeal to the “friends of arushameru”

Your school is an unaided  non-governmental school and hence receives no financial aid what so ever and is solely dependent on the school fees received and, which are very moderate comparatively, to assist the disadvantaged. (US$ 15 per month for ‘O’ Levels and US$ 20 per month for ‘A  Levels). It has managed to reach its present height due to prudent fiscal policies and control followed by the Management. In fact the Primary School has been entirely funded from the School’s savings. However it now requires your monetary  assistance to enable the Management to complete the project and to continue its aims and objects “to further the cause of education in Arusha”. Surely a  noble undertaking to provide quality education to the children, the future leaders of the Nation.

I am sure that Arushites can never forget the town whence they derived their birth and infant nurture and so what ever you are disposed to give generously kindly remit by wire transfer for further credit  to: Arusha Educational & Cultural Society’s Current Account No. 014103006823 with the Arusha Branch of National Bank of Commerce. (NBC LTD – Swift Code NLCBTZTX  and for UK LLOYDS TSB BANK PLC LONDON – Swift Code LOYDGB2LXXX). All contributions will be gratefully received  and  faithfully applied.

With kind regards.
