| Farmers urged to use biological approach in pest
control by Matilda Kirenga and Sobe Mwita A new study has revealed that 30 per cent of pesticides used by countries in sub- Saharan Africa fall short of internationally set standards. This was sounded last week by the Minister for Higher Education Science and Technology, Prof. Peter Msolla, in his official opening address to an international irrigation conference held in Arusha. The conference brought together 50 countries representing six continents and was aimed at enlightening these countries on the effective use of pesticides. Professor Msolla advocated for the use of biological pest control programme by farmers saying that these would ease barriers when searching for international markets. The minister further noted that this biological control would enhance farmers productivity especially of vegetables, fruits and flowers to be exported to the world market. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), the biological approach pest control enhances crop production and has no health risks to humans.
