DC commends Edmund Rice Sinon progress

By Our Correspondent

Evans Balama the district commissioner for Arusha officiated the 16th Graduation Ceremony at Edmund Rice Sinon secondary School on October 5.

The D.C who had recently been transferred from Rukwa region was the first high-ranking Government official to witness recent developments that were made in the school. After his tour of the school on the first day, he commented, no one would think there could be such developments beyond the shanties of Ungalimited.

Ungalimited is a slum to the south of Arusha city, which was formerly feared for its daylight crimes. The school is located six km from the centre of Arusha city past the Shanties. Most inspiring and captivating was the speech he delivered to the gathering at the ceremony.

He acknowledged the effort made by Christian Brothers in committing themselves to promoting education. ‘O’ Level had been extended to ‘A’ Level this year. With first class buildings and modern facilities. He appreciated the Christian Brothers Foundation in Australia for their self-sacrificing support.

He also honored the deeds of Edmund Rice an Irish founder of the order who sold all he had and started a school for street children in Ireland. From this act Edmund Rice Schools spread all over the world.

He threw up a challenge by asking if there would be any Tanzanian who would measure up the deed of Edmund Rice.

The DC commended the integration of secondary school subjects with technical education that the school had in the curriculum. In that regard he told the gathering that it was only through education that the individual and the nation at large could be liberated.
“ If we did not get good education learned nations would be our masters in our country and we would be house servants in their houses,” he emphasized.

Then he appealed to students to make use of the facilities offered in school and to the society to emulate the example of Edmund Rice by sacrificing in supporting education.

Mr. Balama thanked the school administration for the decision taken to have boarding facilities for form one in year 2007. He considered this as another facility to boost up good performance in academics.

The gathering awoke to the glaring reality of the celebrated, inspiring and educative speech of Mr. Balama who left an image of being one of the few remnants of genuine disciples of Mwalimu Nyerere the founder of Tanzania.
