| Kenyan communities to mark Mau Mau Day by Staff Reporter When in early1950s Mau Mau rebels, most of them spotting untended dread locks, killed 32 people in an uprising against colonial rule in Kenya, they met a brutal response from the British. About 150,000 Kenyans were detained in camps, mercilessly beaten up, tortured, sexually abused and even murdered. The Mau Mau, the majority of them drawn from the Kikuyu tribe were protesting against white colonial settlers who took their land. This Saturday, October 21, Kenyan communities and others in Arusha will honour the Mau Mau struggle by staging various activities that include entertainment at Njiro complex starting at 2.00pm. The chief guest will be Mwambi Mwasaru, Executive Director of the Kenyan Human Rights Commission (KHRC). Funds will also be raised towards the Mau Mau reparation suit and the Kilimanjaro Children’s Home in Moshi. Among dignitaries expected at the Mau Mau Day are a representative of the Kenyan High Commission in Tanzania, Rwanda Ambassador to ICTR, the Mayor of Arusha, District Commissioner, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police and CCM officials. A movie “White Terror” will be screened in addition to presentations that include reflections of a Mau Mau General. Parallel programmes, include a mobile Internet clinic by Celtel, children games, a Mau Mau barbeque hosted by Teresa Adami and a live music band.
