Breaking Barriers

Push Your Limits
BY
GEORGE ‘GBENGA OLOWOYE

The extinct volcano of Mt Kilimanjaro is one of the world’s most recognizable peaks. It rises dramatically above the dusty East African plains with its impressive snow-capped summit. It represents the pinnacle of physical achievement for the growing numbers of people who want to test their powers of endurance against the elements each year.

Kilimanjaro is a non-technical mountain that can be climbed by almost anybody. It seems, however, to be the most underestimated mountain in the world resulting in hikers continually turning back from Kibo’s upper slopes. You need to be physically and mentally prepared to climb Kilimanjaro and you certainly need determination and willpower. A few of us guys and gals in Arusha need to make our dreams of climbing this awesome mountain come true before the end of this year by pushing our limits. C’mon guys, let’s book a Kili climb today, after all it lies right at our back-yard here and some ‘Wazungus’ will never die until they reach its summit. Yes, pushing your limits!

Many people get in a rut in life. They go to work, play a little, and go back to work. It is the same thing day in and day out. For these people, they are in a comfort zone and in my opinion, not growing as a person. A friend resigned at the end of last month to focus on what he calls his passion. But how does someone who’s employed make the shift from a steady salary to profits he or she can live on? Definitely, he has really got to push his limits if he must continue to stay afloat. In the same light, I’ll like to share today some useful insights about keeping the money coming in while you start and grow your business by pushing your limits.
You can begin your business as a sideline: Your steady paycheck finances the start-up. When income from the business begins to approximate the minimum income you need to cover basic living costs, you can leave your job and run your business full-time. Push your limits. The Part-Time Plan is another way to venture out on your own which is to line up a part-time job that will provide you with the base income you need to live while you start your business. Sometimes people negotiate to continue their salaried job on a part-time basis rather than quitting outright. Alternatively, you might do temporary work or take a part-time job in an industry that could lead to valuable contacts or referrals.
To help your business grow more quickly, arrange to do your part-time work in other than prime business hours. This will leave you free to market, set appointments, and take business phone calls. Have you considered a network multi-level marketing business? Push your limits.
Lastly, take a look at The Piggyback Plan: Couples sometimes find they can piggyback on each other’s dreams as a way to get a business going. By cutting back on living expenses, one person can leave his or her job to start up the business while the family lives off the other’s salary. This plan is a great way for one parent to stay home with the kids and still work full- or part-time. As the business grows, the family income can return to or even exceed the original level. As soon as the business is consistently bringing in enough to cover the family’s living expenses, the other spouse can leave his or her job to either start another venture or join what then becomes the family business.

In many ways, starting a business is like getting a college degree. Some people are fortunate enough to have a financial cushion that allows them to study on a full-time basis. Others have to work on the side to pay their way. Sometimes this means taking night classes or stretching the course work out over many years as a part-time student. But one way or the other, those who persevere do graduate. So it is with starting a business. Where there’s a will, there’s a way. Push your limits.
