Re-registered guns number shoots to 3,707
by Happy Lazaro
The number of re-registered guns in Arusha region reached a total of 3,707 by August 31.
Re-registration of fire arms was earlier scheduled to last from August 1st to the 31st of the same month but the government has now extended the deadline to the end of this month.
According to Arusha’s Regional Police Commander, Basilio Matei, of the re-registered firearms 1,562 were shotguns, 1,014 rifles, 980 pistols, 146 revolvers and five air guns for sporting purposes. The number of re-registered guns does not however correspond to the number of gun owners because some own more than one.
The deadline for re-registration of firearms had to be extended nationwide because some of the those legally possessing firearms may have traveled out of the country and they have to appear in person for re-registration.
They must also have their finger prints taken in the exercise being undertaken in compliance with the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and Nairobi protocols on proliferation of small arms and light weapons in the Great Lakes Region. Tanzania has ratified the protocol which will be adapted to the Firearms and Ammunition Act.
RPC Matei said that all those who have not re-registered their guns should do so before the end of the new deadline.”After the deadline there will be a house to house check and if one is found with un-registered gun he/she will be arrested and charged in court,” he said.
