Breaking Barriers

PERSISTENT ACTION AND EFFORT
BY
GEORGE ‘GBENGA OLOWOYE
I decided to enroll at one of the local gym a few days ago with a determination to keep fit and maintain my shape and good health. It can be so easy for one to give in to a lifestyle of ease and pleasure at the expense of one’s health. I decided on the contrary. Many like me live in Arusha and never took one kilometer’s walk in ten years. We all soon get used to our automobiles and air-conditioners. Another person goes to slimming club - they are taking action to loose weight - they are focused and motivated. They go every week for the first few weeks, then miss the odd one and have the odd binge. They wander off their plan. I am decided not to wander off my gym visits and occasional long walks. For a slimmer the dream of being slim has to be more powerful than eating whenever and whatever they want - most times it is not! But even if it isn't, being persistent will probably do it - that is keeping on keeping on, despite setbacks or mistakes.
Ever watched a kid doing 'keep ups' with a football? They keep going, dealing with the different bounces and starting up again whenever it all goes wrong. Well making a plan is great, but the 'making it happen' bit is about 'keeping on' over the odd glitch. Keep the end dream in sight and keep on... that's the mindset that seems to work - try it!
Changing your life is a big deal and taking just one action, however significant, will probably not do it, so be ready to have to do about 30 (yes, 30!) things each week to change the habits of a lifetime, to go for your dreams and to insure against setbacks.
Examples of life-changing things you could try in one week (make it up to 30!) might include making phone calls to employers you would like to work for, sending CVs off for jobs, phoning local colleges (or possibly visit the Open University local office) to ask about courses you could do, checking round gyms and leisure centres to ask about fitness classes, contacting some local NGOs for Voluntary Service opportunities. Think positive each and every day; follow up phone calls you have made, ask if you could shadow someone at work to find out about their job, talk to a complete stranger - maybe not on a dark alley! Speak up in a debate or discussion, learn a new skill or hobby, stretch your comfort zone by going somewhere new or by trying something new, become an expert in something, etc.
Yes, you must make renewed effort where you have failed before. You will do yourself, your family, school, business organization and country lots of pride by exercising tremendous and right effort to overcome defeat and laziness. Try by all legitimate means to pursue the right endeavour to attain your dreams. Your persistence might require you to develop physical strength or strength of character and the persistent effort for the well-being of others in your community. In the absence of sustained efforts in marching towards your goals, discouragement creeps in and you allow noble intentions to suffer setbacks and the abortion of great plans. Right dose of effort for the rest of this year is, thus, required to overcome laziness and every limiting barriers of mediocrity that may prevent you from attaining excellent results and performance. Make everyday count towards a fruitful outcome by following the words expressed by Confucius, when he said “Our greatest glory is not in never falling but in rising every time we fall.” Give your success all your energy, effort and persistence action.
