Invest in rain water harvest, Ethiopians advise Babati district

By Thomas Ratsim

A group of visitors from Ethiopia has advised Babati District authorities to invest in rain water harvesting, irrigation and bee-keeping projects at the community level.

Ethiopians group leader, Mr. Ahmed Yimam said that there are hardly any rivers in the area therefore it is wise to make good use of rain water.

He was speaking at a farewell dinner organized by the Babati District Council and attended, among others, by Mr. Bilal Somosomo, Acting District Executive Director.

Mr. Yimam, said as they traveled from Arusha to Babati, about one hundred kilometres, they could not come across any river.

Because there are not many perennial rivers in the district but there are heavy forests and adequate rains, it is thus prudent to emphasise in rain harvest in the rural areas, he said.

The group, however, appreciated how the villagers were protecting and conserving their environment.

The Ethiopians also visited an irrigation scheme which is jointly run by Matufa and Mawemairo villages in the Mbugwe Division, where experts of the Open University of Tanzania (OUT) are advising on preventive measures against diseases such as malaria, bilharzia and liver flukes for livestock by increasing speed of water flow so as to reduce water stagnation.

The Ethiopian group made an eight-day visit to Babati District under the auspices of the Swedish International Development Co-operation Agency (SIDA), which supports both Babati District and Amhara Region in Ethiopia amongst others. The group is the second batch this year to visit Babati while the first came in June.
