by Edward Selasini Road side garage operators who last week said they won’t move to Suye, three kilometers east of the municipality have now been ordered to do so by Arusha’s Regional Commissioner, Colonel Samwel Ndomba (rtd). Ironically the operators had demonstrated to the RC offices seeking his intervention so that they could continue working on roadsides claiming that the newly allocated area is too far from town and also too small for the thousands of mechanics operating haphazardly in the municipality. “This is not a request. It is an order. You must shift your business to the designated place,” the RC told representatives of the garage operators. “Don’t you see how you have made the town look filthy?” The RC made the firm order after visiting the yard in Suye being accompanied by the Arusha District Commissioner, Evans Balama; Municipal Director, Dr. Job Laizer; and the Municipal Solicitor, Anderson Msimba. He said every urban area has its laws and regulations that must be observed by residents and businesses. The RC told the Arusha’s District Commissioner to supervise re-allocation of “plots” at the yard and if found not enough for the mechanics then another yard should be earmarked for them. However, many of the garage operators have now moved north of the Moshi-Nairobi road to the 200 metre buffer between Arumeru district and the municipality. Urban laws are not observed in the area and neither the municipality nor Arumeru district have control of the area with regard to aspects such health, roads and garbage collection and licencing.
