Capturing the Flag: ISM students find new challenges

By Yasmin Rae Stigwood

Climbing Mt Kilimanjaro once would be enough for most people; however, this was not the case for the nine students and three teachers from ISM, who signed up to climb it again, this time the hard way!

Although, it was freezing and we were sleeping in tents, the days passed quickly. Somehow, walking with packs got easier, jokes and stories flew around and a particular discussion that was debated every night about who was more desirable, male rugby players or male soccer players, drove everyone crazy! A conclusion was never achieved. As the altitude increased, the funnier everything seemed to be; the slightest trigger would set some of us off. Even though we were up the mountain, we were always kept updated with the Soccer World Cup scores and there was always a battle about who would win and who was better, and how far Australia would reach and would England be able to claim the cup that they last had in 1966? Baranco Wall was probably one of the highlights of the trip, as well as the different scenic views that could be seen from any point on the mountain.

Though the trip was hard, all nine students and three teachers successfully summited to Uhuru Peak. But of course we cannot forget how good it felt to be able to take a shower after six days! This trip will be well remembered by all and there might even be a few that might try to climb it again!

Yasmin Rae Stigwood is a student at International School Moshi.
