The Corner Flag – by Chris George

Big Wins for the Big Guns

In both the Euro 2008 qualifiers (to be held in Austria and Switzerland) and the Africa Cup of Nations destined for Ghana 2008, most of the big teams chalked up huge wins. A new look and motivated England trashed Andorra 5-0, France defeated Georgia 3-0, Spain beat Liechtenstein 4-0 and Scotland had their biggest win in 37 years in hammering the Faroe Islands 6-0. There were narrow wins for Germany, the Czech Republic, Holland and holders Greece. The shock result of the night was World Champions Italy being held to a 1-1 draw at home to Lithuania. The second round of matches were being played mid-week.

In the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, all Tanzanians were very proud to see their team the Taifa Stars beat Burkina Faso 2-1 in Dar-es-Salaam to go second in the table behind Senegal. Taifa Stars next match is on October 7 in Maputo against Mozambique. The other East African countries had mixed fortunes – Uganda thumped Lesotho 3-0 at home but Kenya were surprisingly beaten 2-1 in Nairobi by lowly Eritrea. The big guns all won. Cameroon beat Rwanda 3-0 away, Egypt won 4-1 against Burundi, Nigeria beat Niger 2-0 and Senegal beat Mozambique 2-0. The next round of qualifiers will take place in the second week of October.

Premier League is here again

After a week’s break the Premier League is back again. Will Manchester United keep their 100% record? Can Portsmouth who are second extend their amazing run (they have not conceded a goal so far)? Can Chelsea climb up the table? These questions will be answered this weekend.

The match of the weekend is the Local Derby at Goodison Park between Everton and Liverpool. The match kicks off at 2.45pm Tanzanian time. In the 5pm matches Arsenal face a tough test at home against Middlesborough who tend to do well against the top teams, Chelsea should romp home against Charlton, Newcastle play Fulham at St James Park, Bolton play Watford and Portsmouth with Premier leading goal scorer Kanu taking on Wigan The 7.15pm match is an exciting one where Man. Utd face their first tough test against Tottenham.

The Sunday match at 6pm sees West Ham who acquired the Argentinian stars Teves and Maschareno at home to Aston Villa and the Monday night match at 10pm pits Reading against Man City.

Will he won’t he saga over

Ashley Cole finally joined the club he loved more – Chelsea from Arsenal on the last day. Chelsea paid £5 million and gave defender William Gallas to Arsenal. When Chelsea play Arsenal next, the big hype will be about the two players facing each other and will be a real grudge match. Arsenal acquired Real Madrid’s Brazilian Julio Baptista in place of Jose Reyes also on the last day.

The transfer window now re-opens in January so the clubs can now concentrate on their football.
