Martin Dzuwa lifts 2006 Safari Open Trophy

The Safari Open 2006, a Tanzania Golf Union (TGU) championship, was held amid charm and glitz at the Arusha Gymkhana Club from July 7 to 9.

The Competition, a division "B" championship (handicap 11 to 24) attracted 61 golfers from Nairobi, Kisumu, Dar es salaam, Morogoro, TPC and Moshi.

The competition was sponsored by Serena Hotels, Jubilee Insurance co., Industrial Promotion Services and Diamond Trust Bank and was played over 3 days 54 holes. Those who took part in the Competition acknowledged it as the most well organized TGU event this Year.

The top honors after three grueling days on the golf course went to a budding golfer Mr. Martin Dzuwa handicap 24 who carded a 221 nett beating second round leader Anthony Crawford. Runners up position went to Flumence Mbuya handicap 18 on a score of 222 nett. The second runners up position went to the evergreen Amir Somji on handicap 13 who carded 224 nett.

The first round 18 holes nett went to Judge S. Park of the UN Tribunal on a score of 70 nett, while the second 18 holes nett went to A. Crawford on a score of 66 nett. The third 18 holes nett went to A.Chiundu of Dar es salaam on 72 nett.

In the "A" Division (0-10 handicap), which was run as a subsidiary division, the winner was Munir Sheriff handicap 7 of Arusha on a nett score of 217. The runners up position went to Simon Trevor of Arusha on a nett score of 218. The 2nd runners up position went to John Karanja of Limuru who beat J.Abira of Kisumu on countback.

The day 18 holes went to F.Michael of TPC on 73 Nett. The second day 18 nett went to J.Abira of Kisumu, and the 3rd day nett went to Rodrick John of Dar es salaam.

Due to the good condition of the Golf Course, there were several winners of two clubs during the event.

Longest drive went to handicap Plus 2 O. Mollel while Col. rtd Kaaya took the nearest to the pin prize.

Speaking at the prize giving ceremony on Sunday, the chief guest Mr. Michael Shirima, who is the TGU Chairman, congratulated the Chairman of the Organizing Committee and his team for a job well done. He also thanked the sponsors for their generosity and urged them as the Agha Khan Group of Companies to come out in the forefront and support sports in Tanzania and particularly for the upcoming youthful players. He also announced the opening of a full fledged TGU office which is situated at the Safari Hotel Business Complex in Arusha to coordinate the activities of golf in Tanzania.

Replying on behalf of the sponsors Serena Hotels, Diamond Trust Bank, Industrial Promotion Services and Jubilee Insurance Co, Mr. Salim Janmohamed congratulated the winners and thanked the corporate companies in Arusha and Tanzania as a whole for the support they have given them and pledged that the AKFED companies will be in the forefront to support more sporting and social events.

He thanked the Gymkhana Club for giving his Group a chance to sponsor such a high profile Tournament and indicated a keen interest in taking part in future Tournaments.
