Don't blame aliens, the council needs to work harder

Recently, the council officials were reported to state that the problem with garbage in Arusha Municipality was mainly due to the mass 'invasion of aliens.' A number of people here find that to be quite a lame excuse.

  • I am a regular reader of the Arusha Times and upon getting the previous issue I got irked by the front page story. I mean the council's claims that much of the garbage in town is brought here by aliens is not true. We are all aware that Arusha is an urban town, where people don't grow their own food and thus has to depend on imported crop produce.

The problem here is that, the council is not doing enough in addition to the fact that the town has inadequate number of garbage trucks. The other thing is that almost all the drainage systems in town have been blocked thus even the flow of sewage water is being hampered. Also, unplanned buildings are also causing the garbage collecting tasks to be difficult.

Arusha needs to learn from Moshi on how to keep the town clean instead of blaming the latter. In Moshi the council workers are dedicated to their duties that is why their areas are always clean. The council should consider buying more garbage trucks and educate the masses on issues of cleanliness and healthy living.

The other thing is that it high time the residents of Arusha become wise enough to realize that, when it comes to cleanliness the council need not be blamed. Every person has a duty to perform to ensure that his or her area is kept clean.

We still need people to bring foodstuff, fruits and other farm products to Arusha, but when it comes to garbage disposal it the council's responsibility to ensure that their people handle the task properly. Residents also need to be educated on issues of cleanliness, because people usually throw their waster products randomly.

It is high time that people who pollute the environment get charged with fines, maybe it will help to cultivate discipline. The other thing is that, the council must define the three types of waste, liquid waste, solid waste and un-perishable garbage and then sort them accordingly during collection.
Since this is a town, it is inevitable that many people will be coming and leaving and the municipal people must adjust themselves to this, it not proper to blame the so called aliens
