Bus ferrying detainees catches fire at ICTR
By Hirondelle News Agency
A bus, which was ferrying genocide suspects from the UN detention facilities to
the court in Arusha, caught fire on Monday morning shortly after the detainees
had alighted.
Firemen at International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda managed to put out the
fire within ten minutes using fire-fighting equipment partly donated by firemen
from Marseilles in France late last year.
At least ten detainees whose trials are ongoing were ferried by the bus. They
include former Rwandan minister of Family and Women Affairs, Pauline
Nyiramasuhuko and her son Arsene Shalom Ntahobali and four former Rwandan army
officers, including two former chiefs of staff: General Augustin Ndindiliyimana
(Para-military police) and General Augustin Bizimungu (army).
This is the third time a fire has broken out the ICTR. During 2004, on two
occasions, fire destroyed some documents near the evidence unit. During those
incidents, the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit.
