Former minister's lead counsel appointed judge in Britain

The lead counsel of a former Rwandan minister on trial for genocide at the
International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda has been appointed a judge in
Britain, Hirondelle News Agency learnt on Monday.
AHoward Morrison has been appointed a judge in England and I am now the lead
counsel@ , Ben Gumpert, the former co-counsel said. Morrison was assigned to the
Midland Circuit.
Gumpert, also from the United Kingdom, who had been co-counsel for Justin
Mugenzi, a former Minister of Commerce, added that a lawyer has not yet been
appointed to take up his former position.
Morrison has already informed the defence counsel and the Registry of the
tribunal of his withdrawal as Mugenzi=s lead counsel.
The trial, known as Government II, in which Mugenzi is jointly charged with
three other former ministers of the interim government, is scheduled to resume
on March 1st. It was adjourned on October 29th 2004 after the testimony of 50
prosecution witnesses. The prosecutor is expected to wind up his case during the
next segment, which will run for one month.
The other accused in the trial, which began November 3, 2003, are the former
Minister of Health, Casimir Bizimungu, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs
Jerome Bicamumpaka and that of Public Services, Prosper Mugiraneza.
