Tanzania invites retired foreigners to share skills
By Nyamanoko Bwire
Tanzania is inviting retired people in developed countries to come and invest or
work in the country so as to impact their skills in local firms.
This was remarked by the Tanzanian Minister of Finance, Basil P. Mramba during
last weekend=s signing of a Memorandum of Understanding for the Dutch Program of
Co-operation with emerging Markets, a ceremony which took place at the Moivaro
Coffee Lodge in Arumeru.
The Royal Netherlands Minister for Development Co-operation, Agnes Van Ardenne,
who was visiting the country last week graced the occasion. She said that the
Dutch Government would continue to support Netherlands= joint ventures aiming at
investing in Tanzania by contributing up to 60 percent of the total project cost
that would qualify.
The 60 percent grant, according to the Dutch Minister, equals over half a
million Euros or approximately, Tsh.725 Million. The priority sectors to be
considered includes agriculture, transport, energy and infrastructure.
The Tanzanian Finance Minister, welcomed the initiative of encouraging
partnerships between local business people in form of Foreign Direct Investment
(FDI) especially because this arrangement would enable Tanzanians to tap from
foreign skills.
Mramba noted that the Middle class which is an important group in poverty
eradication strategies seems to be lacking in Tanzania and he called for more
investments from the West explaining that even the small firms there will become
big here.
He also invited retired people who are out of work there but who are strong
enough to be productive to come and work in local firms thus impact their long
acquired skills to their Tanzanian counterparts.
The signing ceremony which was held last Sunday evening, was also attended by
the Royal Netherlands High Commissioner, Dr. Bernard Berendsen, among other
distinguished guests.
