Studio 53 celebrates first anniversary
Proving that African art, travel, fashion and entertainment
are as popular as ever,
M-Net's African lifestyle program STUDIO 53 celebrates its first anniversary
this month.
The weekly 30-minute show, which began exactly one year ago, has spent the last
12 months on the move and DStv audiences have shared in its African experiences.
Along the way STUDIO 53 has profiled the continent's leading personalities,
experienced Africa's vast diversity and visited over a dozen countries. On the
travel itinerary were stops in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal,
Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, St. Helena, the Seychelles, Morocco,
Zambia, Mozambique, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Angola.
It was a busy schedule but STUDIO 53's dynamic field presenters tackled it with
determination and dedication. It was adventure and action for Katia Muchanga
(Mozambique), Morning-Star Rosario (Namibia), Fareed Khimani (Kenya), Dennis Tau
(South Africa), Chishala Chitoshi (Zambia), Blakofe (Ghana), Mapumba Cilombo (DRC),
Sister Fire (Malawi), Sitandwa Mmopi (Botswana) and Bobby Gatheca (Tanzania).
Meanwhile Zimbabwe's Alyce Chavunduka anchored the show in-studio for the first
year, a role that will now be filled by the duo of Gaetano Kagwa (Uganda) and
Rosie Motene (South Africa).
With presenters and production teams jetting off across the continent, it's not
surprising that the STUDIO 53 guest list included a wide range of African icons.
Among these were - newsman Jeff Koinange, track queen Maria Mutola, music
sensation Angelique Kidjo, Nigerian Carte Blanche Africa presenter Moky Makura
and Princess of Africa Yvonne Chaka Chaka.
Other guests on the show were Senegalese music giant Ishmael Lo, Ghana's OBE
honoree Adelaide Addo-Fening, American athlete Michael Johnson and Zimbabwean
born muso Louis Mhlanga along with Nollywood stars Kate Henshaw-Nuttal, Ramsey
Noauh and Joke Silva.
The show has already completed filming its February inserts and leading the
line-up is footage from the recent commemorative Bob Marley celebrations in
Ethiopia. The events in Addis Ababa included a star-studded concert, a
photography exhibition, a film festival and a book launch.
In February STUDIO 53 also travels to Burkina Faso for the FESPACO FILM FESTIVAL
before heading to Lusaka to check out holiday hotspots and contemporary
jewellery design.
Then it's off to Angola to attend the Luanda's famous carnival and discover more
about this fast growing city. Plus the show takes viewers back to the Spice
Islands of Zanzibar for the Swahili Music Festival.
One adventurous year has now past but another exciting year lies ahead...so
don't miss a moment of STUDIO 53 in 2005.
Audiences in East and West Africa can see the show on M-Net every Thursday
evening. Audiences in Southern Africa can see the show on M-Net every Sunday or
every Thursday on the alternate M-Net (DStv channel 103).
